Disodium Hydrogen Citrate – Disodium hydrogen citrate is a urine alkalizer indicated for the treatment of renal tubular acidosis, gout, and kidney stones. It is mainly used to treat urinary tract infections, painful or difficult urination, kidney stones, urinary acidosis, and gout. Disodium hydrogen citrate raises the pH of the urine and removes excess uric acid from the blood through the urine.

DISODIUM HYDROGEN CITRATE contains disodium bicarbonate, which is metabolized to bicarbonate and increases the excretion of free bicarbonate ions; it increases the solubility of cysteine in urine and ionizes uric acid into soluble urate ions. It helps raise the urine’s pH, making it less acidic.

Mechanism of Disodium Hydrogen Citrate

Disodium hydrogen citrate acts as a urine alkalinizer, primarily by adjusting the pH balance of the urine, making it less acidic. This change in pH helps dissolve certain types of kidney stones and prevents new ones from forming. Citrate, a component of disodium hydrogen citrate, binds to urinary calcium ions to form soluble complexes, reducing the availability of calcium ions for crystal formation, and is particularly useful in the prevention of calcium-containing kidney stones. In addition, the alkaline environment created by disodium hydrogen citrate can have a mild antibacterial effect, preventing the growth of bacteria responsible for urinary infections. Increased urine output helps remove bacteria and crystals. Disodium hydrogen citrate relieves symptoms by reducing the burning sensation associated with acidic urine and promoting urinary comfort.

Uses of Disodium Hydrogen Citrate

Disodium hydrogen citrate, also known as sodium citrate dihydrate, has several uses, both medicinal and non-medicinal. Here are some of them:

  1. Urinary Alkalinizer: Disodium hydrogen citrate is often used as a urine alkalinizer to raise the pH of urine, which can help relieve symptoms associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney stones. By making your urine less acidic, it can help dissolve certain types of kidney stones and reduce discomfort when you urinate.
  2. Acidosis Treatment: In case of metabolic acidosis, where there is too much acid in body fluids, disodium hydrogen citrate can be used as a treatment that helps restore the body’s acid-base balance.
  3. Anticoagulant: The potential use of disodium hydrogen citrate as an anticoagulant has been investigated, particularly in blood transfusions and in the storage of blood samples for laboratory testing.
  4. Food Additive: Sodium citrate is often used in the food industry as an acidity regulator and preservative. It is found in a variety of foods and beverages, including soft drinks, jams, candies, and processed cheeses.
  5. Pharmaceutical Applications: Disodium hydrogen citrate is used as an excipient in medicinal preparations and as a buffer and stabilizer in liquid medicines.
